South Africa says it will stagger the release of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab after trials showed it gives little protection against the highly contagious local variant.
The vaccine was only minimally effective in preventing mild-to-moderate illness against the dominant South African variant.
South Africa is also looking to other manufacturers such as Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson and the government says it expects to receive these new vaccines in due time.
